I firmly believe that rock is dead. 'Sex, drugs and rock & roll'--worse than a myth--it has become a marketing ploy to make the mainstream culture industry seem counter-cultural to rebellious youth. Anyone who caught an episode of Rock Star: Supernova last summer would agree. I see record collecting as a protest against media consolidation. By buying records at thrift stores and garage sales, I have amassed a collection without giving a dime to Warner Music or Bertelson (BMG) (This is activism through consumption). Join Tim in the morning to hear the musical detritus of generations past swept up and disposed of in thrift stores and $1 record bins: elevator music, easy listening, mood music, music for Hi-Fi living, stereophonic effects records, jump jive & swing, gypsy jazz, bebop, west coast cool, beatnik jazz, crime jazz, music for spies and private eyes, soundtracks, library music, French chanson, western swing, cowboy ballads & truckdriver country, bossa nova, nuevo tango, onda nueva, alt-latin, shibuya-kei, downtempo, chill-house and lounge. What I like to call space-age bachelor pad music. Tune in Saturdays, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., to hear music from the original self-destructive jazzbos. Men like Charlie Parker and Chet Baker whose artistry somehow managed to shine while they destroyed their lives and the lives of those close to them with junk and booze.
